U.S. Citizenship & Naturalization Services

Becoming a United States citizen is one of the most important milestones in an immigrant's journey. U.S. citizenship provides valuable rights and opportunities, including the right to vote, apply for a U.S. passport, petition certain family members for immigration benefits, qualify for many federal employment opportunities, and enjoy the security and privileges that come with being an American citizen.

At the Law Offices of Cindy Ramjattan-Paul, P.C., we are committed to helping lawful permanent residents successfully navigate the naturalization process. From determining your eligibility to preparing your application, responding to Requests for Evidence (RFEs), and preparing you for your USCIS interview and civics examination, we provide experienced legal guidance every step of the way.

To qualify for naturalization, applicants generally must meet several important requirements, including:

Age: You must be at least 18 years old when filing Form N-400.

Lawful Permanent Residence: You must be a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder).

Continuous Residence: Most applicants must have maintained continuous residence in the United States as a lawful permanent resident for at least five years immediately before filing. If you are married to and living with a U.S. citizen, you may qualify to apply after three years of permanent residence, provided all statutory requirements are met.

Physical Presence: You generally must have been physically present in the United States for at least half of the required statutory period before filing your application.

Residence in the State: You must have resided for at least three months in the state or USCIS district where you file your naturalization application.

Good Moral Character: Applicants must demonstrate good moral character during the applicable statutory period. Certain criminal convictions, immigration violations, false testimony, tax issues, failure to support dependents, or other conduct may affect eligibility. Every case is unique, and an experienced immigration attorney can evaluate potential concerns before you file.

English Language and Civics Requirements: Most applicants must demonstrate an ability to read, write, and speak basic English and pass a civics examination covering U.S. history and government. Certain applicants may qualify for exemptions or accommodations based on age, length of permanent residence, or a qualifying physical or developmental disability or mental impairment.

As part of the naturalization process, applicants take the Oath of Allegiance, affirming their commitment to support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States.

Some individuals may automatically acquire or derive U.S. citizenship through birth in the United States, birth abroad to U.S. citizen parent(s), or through their parents after birth. Determining whether citizenship was automatically acquired or derived can involve complex legal analysis, and our office can help evaluate your eligibility.

The naturalization process involves more than simply completing forms. Prior immigration history, criminal records, lengthy trips outside the United States, selective service registration, tax compliance, prior removal proceedings, and other factors can affect eligibility. Our office carefully reviews every client's history to identify and address potential issues before submitting an application.

At the Law Offices of Cindy Ramjattan-Paul, P.C., we understand that every citizenship case represents years of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment to building a future in the United States. We provide personalized legal strategies, thorough case preparation, and honest guidance to help clients move confidently through the naturalization process.
